Diabetic retinopathy - or diabetic eye disease - is a medical condition caused by high blood sugar levels damaging the back of the eye (known as the retina).
The retina requires a regular supply of blood, which it gets through a network of blood vessels. Those blood vessels carry oxygen to the eye, more so in the dark when the eye needs a higher oxygen supply. Diabetes damages the blood vessels, which then leak into the eye, causing the retina to become inflamed. This can lead to blindness if left undiagnosed or untreated.
If you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, you are potentially at risk. You're at greater risk if you:
Typically, early signs of the condition are noticed during diabetic eye screening.
Everyone with diabetes who is 12 years old or over is invited for eye screening. How often you're invited depends on your last 2 screening results. If diabetic retinopathy was not found at your last 2 tests, you'll be invited every 2 years.
For diabetic retinopathy that is threatening or affecting your sight, the main treatments are:

The Noctura 400 sleep mask is a non-surgical, non-invasive, home-based therapy that treats and prevents diabetic eye disease.
It emits a gentle, low-level light to ease the oxygen demand in the eye, preventing hypoxia (low levels of oxygen in your body tissues).
The Noctura 400 sleep mask is a CE marked, MHRA registered medical device. This means our product is fully compliant to health, safety and environmental standards within the UK and Europe.
It has been evaluated by the NHS and has proven safety and efficacy for the prevention and treatment of diabetic eye disease.
When you buy the Noctura 400 sleep mask or subscribe monthly, you'll receive:
If you're 18+ years old and have diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, you can use the Noctura 400 sleep mask.
You shouldn't use the mask if you haven't been diagnosed with diabetes, or have other eye conditions which are not diabetic retinopathy (DR) or diabetic macular oedema (DMO). While pregnant women are not disqualified, we recommend that they seek advice from their doctor before using Noctura 400.
